A Berry Bad Seed

VenueHot Box Cafe

Location: 191 Baldwin Street at Kensington Market

Smoothie: Very Berry

Ingredients: Mixed Berries, banana, orange juice.

Modifications: Half orange juice, half chocolate syrup.

Price: $4/glass, $12/pitcher

Star Power: Diffused fireball–eager to be good, but completely failing.

After my previous experience at the Hot Box Cafe, I had very high  hopes of an encore but this smoothie was a major disappointment. Beyond the obvious of being far too icy, it tasted as if it was flavored with berry Kool-Aid. You could taste the metallic powder in the background which was only disturbed by a slew of seeds. Because the seeds are not very edible, you’re spitting them out between drinks. There should be a general rule when it comes to berry smoothies–blend the fruit, strain out the seeds, then proceed.  The thick iciness of the smoothie made it a mess to pour and the chocolate syrup which should have been mixed into the smoothie was drizzled as a garnish on top. Whoever was unfortunate enough to get the first glass was the only one to have the chocolate syrup. Overall, this was a very unpleasant smoothie.
